Since New Orleans and the surrounding areas are at such a low elevation,
the water table is very close to the surface. So, digging graves is a
problem. As a result, cemetaries in the area traditionally consist
of above-ground tombs and crypts. There are whole industries and
architecture that have arisen there around lavish burials for the
wealthy.
This cemetary is one of the largest in New Orleans. Interestingly
enough, it's actually built on the site of an old horse racing track,
and the main road still foolow the original oval.
